Tree Walks and Events

As the name suggests, this walk explores how to identify trees in winter with no leaves on.

Over a two hour walk I cover a range of identification principles to build a framework for identifying trees. This looks at the tree buds and bud arrangement; canopy structure of the tree; bark colour and patterns plus species specific tips for each tree.

How to identify trees when they are in leaf! Although generally seen as a bit more straightforward than winter tree identification, learning about trees in leaf still has its challenges!

This is a two hour walk learning an identification framework looking at leaves; flowers, fruits or seeds; and other species traits. 

Why do trees change colour in autumn? Why do some trees lose their leaves?

These are some of the areas I cover on the autumn tree walk. Ranging from the aesthetic value of autumn trees, to the biological reasons behind why this happens, plus histories and interesting facts on each tree we see.

If I had a favourite tree walk then it would probably be this one!

Each tree is a tower block of bio-diversity. When you know where to look, they can be an endless source of fascination for all manner of invertebrates.

On this walk I look at tree biology, types of habitat provided by trees, why they are so important or rare, and how we can manage trees to build invertebrate populations.

Trees are one of the oldest living organisms to have ever existed, the oldest trees today are believed to be around 5000 years old.

How do trees live this long? Can a tree be immortal? How does a trees life span differ to a humans?

These are some of the topics that I explore on this walk. Looking at how trees can live to such an old age, the important role that ancient trees play and how we can protect them.

For millennia trees have been amongst the most sacred and important parts of life. From sources of food, timber, shelter and worship; trees have shaped human existence, evolution and society.

This walk explores the relationship between trees and humans, the importance that trees have played in society and the beliefs surrounding them.
